The FIM Women's World Championship has been announced to begin in 2024 as a single-make support series based in Europe. The championship will run approximately six races and be a "final destination" for women riders. It will allow them to race professionally, and no restrictions will be placed on women wishing to enter open-gender categories.
The bikes used will have a performance level "close to Supersport," with the Yamaha R7, Aprilia RS 660, and Kawasaki Ninja 650 among those likely to be chosen. However, critics argue that women motorcycle racers may require a different career target than their male counterparts. The new championship may discourage women from trying to reach the pinnacle of their sport, MotoGP.
While it is no bad thing to have a championship dedicated to getting more women racing motorcycles, the pool of women riders who can ride one fast enough to be considered "world championship worthy" might prove to be quite small. Fixing this will require intervention at the entry-level, such as more girls racing minibikes. However, having more women racing motorcycles on TV will create a larger pool of riders further up the chain when those girls progress to full-sized motorcycles on full-sized tracks.
