A 1984 BMW K100 that was originally built in a cringe-worthy brat-style, sat unused and non-functional until its current owner acquired it just before the pandemic. However, the owner lacked the necessary skills to take on the task of customizing it and turned it over to the professionals at Ellaspede in 2022. The Australian shop took inspiration from a previous build by RetroRides, and with a few tweaks and additions, transformed it into a sporty cafe racer.
The K100 already had RetroRides components installed, but Ellaspede made some alterations to the bolt-on rear end kit and monoshock arrangement to achieve a sportier look. They also added a premium Black Edition shock absorber from YSS. A CNC-machined cover now encases the dual LED lighting strips beneath the tail, and an aluminum panel was crafted to give the bike a straight cafe racer-style bone line.
Ellaspede also installed a bespoke seat pan covered with UV-resistant black vinyl upholstery, handmade fenders, and an aftermarket belly pan. The K100’s front-end running gear now includes inverted forks and high-end brakes from a Suzuki GSX-R, with dual-purpose Heidenau K60 Scout tires measuring 120/80 up front and 140/80 at the rear. The cockpit has clip-on handlebars, a fresh top clamp with flush-mounted instrumentation, and discreet switches and a digital speedo from Motogadget. The LED headlight, Motogadget turn signals, and underslung bar-end mirrors from Daytona give the bike a sleek and modern appearance.
The original 987cc four-cylinder motor was found to be in good condition, so it was painted black and adorned with polished metal details. The factory hoops were retained, painted black, and coated in a glossy olive green finish. The standard exhaust headers were shortened and paired with a single stainless steel aftermarket muffler. The result is a stunning and sporty custom cafe racer that breathes new life into the classic BMW K100.
