Buell Motorcycles has issued a safety recall for certain 2021 and 2022 1190 RX and 1190 SX motorcycles. The recall is due to an improperly installed index spring, which could result in the inability to shift into the intended gear or cause the gear to slip without warning. The recall affects up to 30 motorcycles or about 90 percent of these models, all of which were produced between November 1, 2022, and December 31, 2022.
According to Buell's Part 573 Safety Recall Report to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the problem is caused by outdated process sheets used during the bike's assembly. The report states that some index springs may be resting against the side of the engine case instead of laying against the boss in the case, reducing the spring force being applied.
Buell has provided a description of the remedy, which involves the correction of the index spring's position. The recall services will be completed at the Buell Factory or certified service centers, and the process of disassembly, index spring correction, and reassembly, as well as the required parts, will be provided to the service centers by Buell.
The affected motorcycles' VIN ranges are included in the recall, and Buell will notify dealers and owners of the recall from April 14 to April 28, 2023. Owners can contact Buell customer service at 1-616-719-5917 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) for more information.
