Yamaha took the stage at the prestigious Goodwood Festival of Speed to reveal their latest creation, the XSR900 DB40 Prototype. This prototype is based on the popular XSR900 model and pays tribute to Yamaha's iconic Deltabox chassis, marking its 40th anniversary.
Back in the 1980s, Yamaha revolutionized motorcycle engineering with the introduction of the Deltabox chassis in their Grand Prix racing machines. This cutting-edge technology eventually made its way into Yamaha's road bikes, and four decades later, the Deltabox design continues to be a core feature in many Yamaha motorcycles.
The XSR900 DB40 Prototype features the renowned 890cc 'CP3' triple-cylinder engine, known for its charismatic performance. It is housed within the latest version of the Deltabox-style frame, showcasing the timeless appeal and functionality of this iconic chassis design.
From a side view, the Deltabox chassis forms a triangular structure that connects the head pipe to the swing-arm pivot, while its cross-section takes a box-shaped form. This configuration ensures exceptional rigidity and precise feedback in crucial areas for the rider. The cross-shaped box section maximizes surface area, resulting in a lighter weight chassis with superior rigidity.
Yamaha first introduced the Deltabox chassis in their 1982 YZR500 OW61 Grand Prix machine, and just three years later, it made its debut in a production racer, the TZR250. Since then, the Deltabox has become synonymous with Yamaha's Supersport models, including the groundbreaking R1, which celebrates its 25th anniversary this year.
The XSR900 DB40 Prototype is the latest addition to Yamaha's lineup, showcasing their commitment to honoring their racing heritage while delivering exciting models based on the XSR900 platform.
With the XSR900 DB40 Prototype, Yamaha invites enthusiasts to appreciate the enduring legacy of the Deltabox chassis and experience the thrill of riding a motorcycle that combines timeless design with modern performance.
