Former Grand Prix star, Ron Haslam, has been honored with an esteemed degree from the University of Derby as a tribute to his exceptional racing career and invaluable on-track instruction. Over an impressive span of 24 years, Ron and his team at the Ron Haslam Race School at Donington Park imparted their knowledge to more than 86,000 riders, providing invaluable guidance and training.
The closure of the Ron Haslam Race School at the end of 2020 marked the end of an era, but it also solidified Ron's legacy in the world of motorcycling. His outstanding contributions and impact on the sport and all those who benefited from his race school instruction were recognized by Nicola Drew, a former pupil and current PhD student at the University of York. Nicola took it upon herself to nominate Ron for the prestigious honorary degree.
After submitting the nomination report in November 2019, Nicola received the wonderful news of its acceptance in June 2022. However, she had to keep it a well-guarded secret until Ron was officially notified in February 2023.
The graduation ceremony, scheduled for Wednesday, July 19, will see Ron being bestowed with the honorary Master of the University degree (HonMUniv), alongside other distinguished recipients like former West Indies cricketer, Michael Holding.
Overwhelmed with pride and gratitude, Ron Haslam expressed his feelings about the honor, stating, "It makes me so proud to know that we gave that much enjoyment and pleasure to people. I can’t believe it, to be honest. I’m a normal lad and to get something like that is incredible."
Ron Haslam's contributions to the world of motorcycling and the thousands of riders he has influenced through his race school have left an indelible mark, and the honorary degree from the University of Derby is a fitting testament to his illustrious career and dedication to the sport.
