Yamaha Motor Europe is kicking off a year-long celebration to honor the 50th anniversary of its legendary YZ model range, featuring special edition race bikes.
Before delving into the exciting details, it's essential to note that the YZ models are not street-legal, lacking lights and equipped with an 18-inch rear wheel, making them purely off-road machines. Nevertheless, the YZ series has garnered a massive fan following worldwide, with various iterations capturing the hearts of riders everywhere.
To mark this historic milestone of five decades, the Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP and MX2 teams displayed a striking retro-inspired livery at the MXGP of Flanders in Lommel, Belgium, while the Monster Energy Yamaha Star Racing riders showcased the same special edition look at the 2023 AMA Pro Motocross Championship in Washougal, United States.
The images of these bikes are undoubtedly eye-candy, and they serve as potential inspiration for any bike build enthusiast. The YZ250 first hit production lines in 1974, but its journey to success began even earlier with a prototype version ridden by Hakan Andersson in the 1973 FIM 250cc Motocross World Championship. Surpassing all expectations, Andersson secured Yamaha's first motocross world title with the groundbreaking monoshock suspension onboard the YZM250.
Throughout its illustrious history, the Yamaha YZ series has racked up an impressive 34 FIM motocross world titles, with the most recent triumph achieved by Nancy van de Ven in the 2022 FIM Women’s Motocross World Championship.
The specially designed livery on these race bikes pays homage to the iconic colors that adorned the YZ250, YZ125, and YZ80 two-stroke bikes launched by Yamaha in 1993. These releases followed American racer and AMA Motorcycle Hall of Famer Donny Schmit's victory in the FIM 250 Motocross World Championship the previous year. The combination of history, innovation, and iconic design makes the YZ models a timeless classic that continues to captivate motocross enthusiasts around the globe.
