Meet Mike Gray, a true two-wheeler enthusiast with a passion for riding. From road racing to mountain biking, he has experienced it all. Eventually, his love for motorcycles led him to the iconic 2009 Kawasaki KLR 650 - a bike he affectionately calls his 'woods weapon.' Let's dive into the details of this impressive custom build.
Why Choose the 2009 Kawasaki KLR 650?
The KLR's reputation for simplicity and reliability was a significant factor in Mike's decision. It's an adventure bike with a range of aftermarket parts, making it perfect for customization. The bike's durability and versatility make it an all-around excellent choice for adventure riding.
Custom Modifications and Upgrades
Mike's customizations have transformed the KLR into a true off-road beast. The bike features a lightweight Muzzys aftermarket pipe, providing enhanced performance and weight reduction. Knobby Pirelli MT 21 tires were added for improved off-road capability.
For visibility, Mike installed an 8" Trail Tech headlight, ensuring clear sight during day and night off-road rides. The Trail Tech computer replaced the original instrumentation, and a custom rack with cleats replaced the passenger pegs for lashing soft bags.
One of the standout modifications is the IMS 10-gallon tank, replacing the original tank and shrouds. This upgrade not only provides increased fuel capacity but also lowers the bike's center of gravity, enhancing stability.
Favorite Upgrade: Aftermarket Springs
Mike's favorite upgrade is the aftermarket springs for the suspension. The KLR's second-generation suspension was known for being soft, but with these springs, Mike experienced better off-road performance without bottoming out.
The Joys of Dual Sport Riding
Central Oregon holds a special place in Mike's heart, with its vast network of forest and ranch roads offering incredible dual sport riding opportunities. His backyard provides challenging terrains, from rocky sections to sandy stretches. A particular favorite ride leads to Summer Lake Hot Springs, known as "Bad Fandango," where wild horses roam free. It's a beautiful yet engaging route, requiring riders to stay alert and focused on their line choices.
Mike's custom 2009 Kawasaki KLR 650 exemplifies the thrill of adventure riding, offering both style and performance on and off the road. Whether you're exploring forest roads or tackling technical trails, this custom build promises an unforgettable experience.
