MCN has obtained spy shots of what seems to be a new A2 sportsbike, possibly the Aprilia RS440, aimed at bridging the gap between the 14.8bhp Aprilia RS125 and the 99bhp Aprilia RS660.

During a development ride, this test mule was spotted alongside the Moto Guzzi Stelvio adventure bike. While the bike bears 'RS660' on the fairing, it differs from the 659cc sibling with its single front brake disc, unlike the RS660's twin 320mm rotor arrangement.

Other notable distinctions include the TVS Eurogrip tires, likely offering different performance from the RS660's Pirelli Rosso Corsa 2s, and a swingarm design that is more basic than the 660's aluminum unit.

The bike's engine configuration remains unclear, but the left-side crankcase appears similar to the existing 660, hinting at a potential A2-licence parallel twin engine to compete with rivals like Kawasaki Ninja 400, Yamaha R3, Honda CBR500R, and KTM RC390.

The bodywork also shows differences, like the absence of a lip on the left side of the front fairing. A sizable cluster suggests possible electronic features. The complete bike is expected to be released by the end of 2023.

The Aprilia RS440 boasts an LED headlight setup, similar to the RS660, inspired by the RSV4 superbike. While it makes sense in the UK, it could also be targeted at emerging markets like India, where smaller-capacity affordable models are more popular.

As with Aprilia's other sportsbikes, a naked Tuono version of the RS440 might follow after the initial release. Despite its mini superbike appearance, the bike's pegs are set reasonably low, providing a comfortable and practical riding position for everyday use.

An aluminum twin-spar chassis appears to hold the motor in place, suggesting it might use the engine as a stressed member. Aprilia declined to comment on the development model when approached by MCN.
