In spite of its name, Rusty Wrench Motorcycles in Portugal consistently produces top-notch custom bikes. This particular Honda CB750, which they've skillfully transformed into a sleek drag-style custom, is a prime example. Originally discovered in a dilapidated barn, this 1979-model CB750 has undergone a remarkable makeover.
The trend of long and low hardtail motorcycles seems to be all the rage lately, even though they may not be the most practical rides. Nevertheless, their hot rod aesthetics have an undeniable appeal, reminding us that custom motorcycles need not always prioritize practicality.
This specific Honda CB750 exudes a speed racer vibe, and there's a heartwarming reason behind it. The founders of Rusty Wrench Motorcycles, Vera and Francisco Correia, embarked on this project as a family endeavor, drawing inspiration from their seven-year-old son, Rafael, who has a passion for Sonic the Hedgehog and fast motorcycles.
Given the initial state of the donor bike, Rusty Wrench had their work cut out for them to bring the CB750 up to speed. Their efforts included a complete engine rebuild, outfitting it with high-compression pistons, forged connecting rods, and a Dyna 2000 ignition system. Furthermore, the bike now boasts a cleaner appearance compared to its factory days, thanks to a combination of painted and polished finishes.
From the outset, Vera and Francisco aimed to incorporate a variety of copper and bronze accents into the design. The four-into-one Vance & Hines exhaust system features a finely crafted copper end cap, and the OEM front sprocket cover is adorned with copper-lined perforations.
The team also meticulously refurbished the Comstar wheels, applying bronze, black, and clear finishes before reassembling them. While the original rear drum brake remains intact, the front now boasts twin Nissin calipers from a Honda CBR600. Staying true to the drag racing theme, the bike sports an Avon Speedmaster tire up front and a sleek Racemaster tire at the rear.
Turning to the suspension, Rusty Wrench modified the original forks to lower the CB750, and they removed the twin shock mounts from the swingarm, stiffening it to eliminate the rear suspension entirely. A newly crafted subframe completes the rear end.
Rusty Wrench then set about enhancing the CB750 with fresh bodywork. An aftermarket fairing adorns the front, complemented by a tinted screen that echoes the bike's gold accents. The fuel tank is a handcrafted piece, as is the knurled aluminum gas cap.
At the rear, a custom-made tail hump houses a slim LED tail light, seamlessly integrated. As expected from Rusty Wrench, the seat upholstery is a work of art, combining elegant stitch patterns with various textures.
Copper accents continue in the cockpit with aftermarket throttle and Kustom Tech levers. Modern clip-ons, along with a handmade "dash" housing a tachometer and a pair of LED warning lights, enhance the bike's functionality. The headlight is positioned lower on the left side of the bike.
Rusty Wrench meticulously designed the foot controls and their mounting brackets, sprinkling just the right amount of copper details throughout the bike.
The finishing touch is an eye-catching livery that pays homage to classic chopper and hot rod styles. The base coat is a deep green, adorned with yellow, red, and grey stripes that gracefully traverse the bike from front to back. Notably, a pair of 'SpeedRaf' logos proudly grace the tank, a heartfelt nod to Rafael and his love for speed.
Admittedly, a custom Honda CB750 with minimal suspension may not cater to everyone's tastes, but it undoubtedly brings immense joy to Rafael. And there's no doubt that his parents will cherish it until he's old enough to take it for a spin.
