Introducing the BMW M 1000 R, the latest addition to Munich's high-performance M lineup, and it just might be a masterpiece. While the term "masterpiece" is often overused, it could be fitting when discussing the all-new 2023 BMW M 1000 R. Rarely does a new motorcycle come close to perfection, but BMW seems to have achieved it with this latest creation.
It all starts with the letter M, which, for those unfamiliar, signifies the pinnacle of performance and specification in BMW's lineup. Historically, the M designation was reserved for BMW's car division, originating as the brand's high-performance arm in 1972. However, in 2017, BMW expanded the M family to include dedicated M motorcycles, starting with the impressive M 1000 RR superbike.
The promise of more M models has now been fulfilled with the unveiling of the M 1000 R earlier this year. While the M double RR may have been slightly out of reach for the average rider, the M single R aims to deliver similar levels of performance in a more accessible package.
And BMW has certainly succeeded in this endeavor. The M 1000 R is a remarkable motorcycle, offering exhilaration, luxury, and cutting-edge technology. A ride on one will leave you in awe, even if your license may not be too happy.
Pricing for the 2023 BMW M 1000 R
The BMW M 1000 R starts at $32,290 plus on-road costs, translating to just under $35,000 when you factor in additional expenses. Considering the extensive equipment and premium M designation, this price tag is quite reasonable.
For comparison, the S 1000 R, which serves as the foundation for the M 1000 R, starts at $22,090 plus on-road costs or slightly over $24,000 ride away. However, the M version offers significantly more horsepower, advanced technology, and BMW's ShiftCam. For reference, the fully-faired M 1000 RR superbike starts at $52,440 plus on-road costs.
Competing in the same league, the Ducati Streetfighter V4 begins at $34,900 ride away, while the Aprilia Tuono V4 Factory starts at $33,490 ride away. Other contenders include the KTM 1290 Super Duke R ($30,915 ride away), the Triumph Speed Triple RS ($28,990 ride away), and the Yamaha MT-10SP ($28,499 ride away). Only the Streetfighter V4 comes close to matching the M 1000 R's 210 horsepower with the Ducati producing 208hp.
For those seeking even more M flair, the optional M Competition package, as seen on our test unit, raises the price tag to $39,890 plus on-road costs (approximately $42,000 ride away). This package includes additional carbon components, particularly the stunning M carbon wheels, premium components, and an exclusive Black Storm Metallic/M Motorsport color scheme.
What We Love About the 2023 BMW M 1000 R
When the updated S 1000 R was introduced in 2021, it left horsepower enthusiasts wanting more. The bike lacked ShiftCam and boasted fewer horses than its fully-faired S 1000 RR sibling (though 163hp is still impressive). With the M 1000 R, BMW has rectified this situation.
The new M 1000 R matches the S 1000 RR superbike in power output, delivering 210hp at 13,750rpm and 113Nm at 11,100rpm, all in a more user-friendly upright package. "User-friendly" aptly describes the M 1000 R because, while it's astonishingly fast and track-focused, it also excels on public roads. It adapts seamlessly to varying speeds and terrains, making it a versatile companion.
There's no need to delve too deep into engine performance because the specs speak for themselves. Suffice it to say, the M 1000 R packs a punch with abundant power and torque at your disposal. It's undeniably fast, yet it remains manageable.
The comprehensive suite of electronics is another highlight. The M designation equips the bike with the highest level of specifications, including throttle maps, four ride modes (including a Race Pro mode), dynamic traction control, slide control, advanced ABS, adaptive LED lighting, motor slip regulation, and semi-active suspension.
But there's more. The M model also comes standard with a quickshifter, a 6.5-inch TFT display with connectivity, heated grips, cruise control, keyless ignition, and a lightweight M battery. The competition package adds an M GPS Laptrigger function to the mix. All of this technology functions seamlessly, and the menu systems are user-friendly, thanks in part to the signature navigation wheel. With the added horsepower, the significant level of safety is reassuring.
In terms of handling, the M 1000 R feels remarkably lightweight and incredibly agile. It effortlessly navigates corners and maintains a perfect line through twists and turns. While the M is only marginally lighter than the S 1000 R on paper (though the S can be fitted with an M package to equalize their weight), its handling dynamics make it exceptionally user-friendly.
The Marzocchi suspension, while initially firm out of the box, is semi-active and adjustable, allowing riders to fine-tune their preferences. An adjustable steering damper and a comfortable riding position with wide handlebars further contribute to the bike's ease of use.
There's plenty more to discuss about this bike, as it's packed with high-end M components and stylish details. Notably, the M winglets give it a MotoGP-inspired, race-ready appearance, although their performance benefits may only become evident on a track.
What We Don't Like About the 2023 BMW M 1000 R
If we're being honest, inline 4-cylinder engines aren't our personal favorite. They often lack the raw character of other engine configurations and tend to produce noticeable vibrations. While some of these characteristics apply to the M 1000 R, it's challenging to criticize the engine because it performs exceptionally well. What it may lack in engine character, it more than compensates for with its remarkable performance, style, and technology.
But that's our only substantial complaint. In fact, the main challenge with this bike is that it makes going fast almost too easy. While it can certainly handle urban commutes and public roads, it feels almost sacrilegious not to tap into its full power potential. In other words, while you could theoretically use this bike for daily commuting, it truly shines on the track or on twisty country roads away from prying eyes.
Should You Consider the 2023 BMW M 1000 R?
Despite the universal acclaim for the M 1000 R, it's not a motorcycle for everyone. It's lightweight and relatively easy to ride, but its high power output demands a skilled and responsible rider to fully enjoy it. If you fit that profile, then this might be the ultimate motorcycle experience for you.
The M 1000 R impresses from every angle, boasting premium style and performance. With its superb engine, refined chassis, advanced suspension, and cutting-edge technology, it's challenging to find significant flaws.
