Yamaha, renowned for its diverse range of sportbikes tailored to novice riders in regions with license restrictions, has introduced the 2023 editions of the YZF-R125 and YZF-R15 in Japan. These compact sportbikes fall into different categories: moped class 2 and light motorcycle classes. A quick glance at these new models reveals their design inspiration drawn from their larger counterparts, the YZF-R7 and YZF-R1.
In a competitive market teeming with budget-friendly entry-level sportbikes, Yamaha distinguishes itself with the YZF-R15 and YZF-R125. Their impressive features set new standards within their respective classes. Notably, both models now come equipped with assist and slipper clutches, enhancing control during downshifting and ensuring a smoother ride. Additionally, they feature a traction control system, providing novice riders with the confidence to tackle diverse weather conditions.
On the technological front, Yamaha equips these beginner-friendly bikes with remarkable components. They sport bi-function LED headlights and LCD instrument panels reminiscent of previous generations of the YZF-R1. Rolling on 17-inch wheels, they boast inverted front forks and a rear monoshock attached to a premium aluminum swingarm for superior suspension.
In terms of performance, these bikes may not be powerhouses, boasting 125cc and 155cc single-cylinder engines, respectively. However, both benefit from liquid-cooling, fuel injection, and Yamaha's Variable Valve Actuation (VVA) system, optimizing valve timing for fuel efficiency and low-end torque, while delivering confidence-inspiring power at higher RPMs. Power is transmitted to the rear wheel via a six-speed manual transmission, now featuring a slipper clutch. Furthermore, an optional quick-shifter is available for enthusiasts seeking even more exciting performance.
Regarding pricing and availability, the Yamaha YZF-R125 and YZF-R15 are set to hit the Japanese market on October 16, 2023. The YZF-R125 is priced at $3,502 USD, while the larger YZF-R15 will retail for approximately $3,725 USD.
