The Duke is a great bike...lack of wind protection kind of stinks though.

I’ve got a 2007 R6s and I also had a 2005 R1 that I bought new in December 2004. It was a great bike for me!!! I had about 30k miles on it when I sold it. Stock suspension was good enough for about the first 6-7 years, but the rear shock degraded over time so I bought an Ohlins rear and resprung the front and it worked great again until I bought my 2018 R1.

The 2005-07 R1 would be a good choice...it’s got good power, but not too overwhelming and handled as good as my 2018. The seating position is also similar to the R6 with a little lower seat than the newer bikes. The 2018 is a beast...probably not a great next step, but if you can find a well taken care of 05-07 especially if the suspension has been upgraded, that would be my suggestion. I had mine geared -1f/+2r for the mountain roads around here and I could ride faster (it feels like that anyway) than I can on my 2018.
