Motorway Riding - any tips?

Does anyone have any tips for Motorway riding? As much as I wish to avoid riding the motorway, sometimes it’s necessary - I’m (Covid dependent) making the trip up to Liverpool to get the Isle of Man ferry in Summer and I’m going to have to take the motorway unless I want my trip to take forever.

Any seasoned motorway riders out there got any advice for comfort, safety, enjoyment etc?

Just relax and enjoy, it’s the same as any other road, keep pace with traffic, move to space all the time and just be aware that the situation changes quickly, do t pin yourself behind trucks and such.

Ali, Cheers Ali, I find my hands get really tired and I think I’m just gripping too hard, probably out of nerves or tension.

Karl Kramer, Nothing really to be nervous of mate, you need to be more aware but it’s nothing more then a dual carriageway with an extra lane, and if your on either the inside or outside then it should concern you. The middle lane obviously means two lanes of traffic to think about. If your gripping too hard all your inputs through the bars will be jerky and over pronounced, try writing your name on a piece of paper with a death grip on the pen! Try fatter grips may reduce the train on your hands.

make sure you stay warm too. When you get cold or uncomfortable it makes it far more difficult to endure.

deffo release that death grip! some people buy a throttle aid if they do long motorways. it's effectively a clip on thump lever that reduces the need for the grip.

ST.LL, Thanks for the advice! Yeh got some warmer gloves and thermo layers on their way. My old man also suggested a cruise control clip - guessing that’s a similar/same thing. Cheers ?

Karl Kramer, the thumb clip on you'd still have to hold in place but the cruise control clip fastens the grip.

For me, hot grips are a good shout too and if you can stretch to heated gloves and jacket, they make a massive difference in the cold.

Karl Kramer, I'd stay away from following lorries as well, I'm sure you've already experienced being behind one in the wet or damp conditions ?
