Out of wheelchair
I'm a fairly new rider, got my first 320cc in 2016, totaled it on a short wall driving too fast on a rainy night while stressfully getting out of work to try and hit a restaurant before closing. I was lucky and got away with scrapes, a sprain and a couple of nasty bruises.
Five months later I find this beautiful custom DR650 up for a steal, and I'm thinking I'll just be taking it around the block every now and again. Though I still have to take it for inspection to get it transferred to my name.
I'm not very used to riding, much less an older motorcycle which doesn't have a gear indicator. So I'm guessing this is what happened...
The very first day I take out the bike to get it transferred to my name... I was carefully taking it through rush hour. I came up to a street where there was heavy traffic and both side of the lanes were going very slow. I had to stop just because of the traffic. I might not have switched the gear down to 1st properly and the bike choked on me. So I started her up again and took off with a little more gas.
This is a 650cc dual sport, single cylinder, bike. It has quite a bit of torque. It didn't just start chugging along nicely, it really took off in a wheely. As I fell back on the seat I must have pulled on the gas as the bike accelerated even further into the wheely. I must have gone a long way upright since it felt as if I was slowly coming into the left lane, where I slammed into the left headlight of a pickup, still in a wheely. Must have been going fast as I broke my left foot on the pedal, dislocated my left hip, and broke both my wrists on the handlebars.
Strangely the bike wasn't that hurt, and is already road worthy, still needs a paint job though.
It's been 50 days since the accident, and but for my wrists I probably would have been trying to learn to wheely on my wheelchair. Now that I'm walking again I'll likely not be using it voluntarily. Had a second round of surgery on my wrists about 22 days ago, will soon be in physiotherapy. My hip is still hurting but doc says nothing to do but wait.
Friends and family have advised me to sell the motorcycle for various reasons, but I'm keeping the bike.
