I first heard about the 1948 trip on an Air New Zealand DC8 flight to Tahiti in 1977 from the passenger that I was randomly seated next to - Nancy Johnson who asked where I was staying in LA. I said with Dick Walker. She said "Ask Dick Walker if he did a bike trip in South America in 1948". Dick said YES. Turns out Nancy had been a friend of Paul Harder's.
