London Mayor asked manufacturers to produce motorcycles and scooters with anti-theft systems.
Scooter and motorcycle stealing exhausted the entire UK, especially the capital. There were over 14,000 motorcycle thefts in London last year, and 23,430 crimes committed using motorcycles/scooters, a 163% increase on the year before. The government tries to fight it, but everything is in vain. In a desperate attempt to solve the problem, London Mayor Sadiq Khan has urged bike producers to make them harder to steal.
Khan invited the representatives of Honda, Suzuki, Yamaha, BMW and Piaggio to a moped crime summit at City Hall, where he addressed his request to manufactures to take more responsibility for public safety by making their bikes harder to steal. More anti-theft measures should be included in designs, according to Khan, who also suggested retro-fitting security devices to existing models.
"Manufacturers should help us to solve the problem at the source. The design of motorcycles makes them far too easy to steal and we need to fight against this in the first place, if we want to make our streets safer, "Khan said.
Almost all manufacturers perceived his words skeptically. They are realists and understand that there is no magic solution in designing a motorcycle. The Association of Producers asked the Mayor not to blame and not make them the main cause of the crime epidemic in London.
