Aprilia plans to use a new carbon fibre swingarm in one of the next races, as private tests at Mugello were really successful. The new component can be installed on the prototype either at this weekend's Le Mans round, or at the factory's home event at the same Mugello circuit from June 1-3.
Last week Aleix Espargaro spent focusing on new components such as the swingarm. The Spaniard was satisfied, as he is ready to use any advantage to restore his position after the unsuccessful start of the season. Aleix completed just one 2018 race at full speed.
"Le Mans is a lot of stop-and-go and the Aprilia is not the best for this," Espargaro said. "But I don’t care about the layout or the country of the Grand Prix, I will try to do everything possible to put the bike on the podium."
The Spanish rider finished tenth in Texas, and literally failed the other three races. So he is not going to be more cautious and will squeeze out the maximum.
"There is one small positive moment in this situation. With three zeroes, it’s difficult to fight for a good position in the championship, so now nothing holds me back. I will give 100% to fight for the podium every weekend - I have no other choice, "added Aleix.
Scott Redding has one point less than his teammate and spent the Mugello test working on set-up.
By the way, Ducati has used a carbon fibre swingarm since 2009, and Honda introduced a working prototype during 2018 winter testing.
