Week two - Hobart
Hobart is a city that provides a visitor with plenty to do. In preparation for the target of the nautical nature of my visit I went to the Hobart Maritime Museum; small but competent. The museum deals with the challenge of having a significant seafaring history and a limited space to express the extent of Tasmania's maritime heritage with aplomb. There are many interesting exhibits and a coherent story across many marine topics. Indigenous marine history, colonisation, whaling, commerce, defence and the environment are all treated well in the limited space.
After the museum I repaired to the New Sydney Hotel and dined on a substantial burger and sweet potato chips accompanied by some Pagan cherry-apple cider - consequently a walk was required!
Keeping with the museum theme, the next day I visited the Hobart Military Museum in the restricted military precinct (its a live defence base). The museum is in the original military gaol and the volunteers provided a great overview of the history and the exhibits. This venue is also very worth visiting.
