On Saturday afternoon, I got a chance to check out the infamous Coyote Trail #101
On the west side of Woodchute Mountain (across Hwy 89A from Mingus Mountain). Staged from the Woodchute Trailhead, rode Martin Canyon Trail #103 down and Coyote Trail #101 up.
Trail #103 is chunky, but it doesn't demand much talent (at least in the downhill direction). It's essentially a glorified rock crawler road, but it's still super scenic and plenty fun.
Trail #101 delivered the beatdown I was seeking. I thought route finding on #101 would be harder than it was, but it actually wasn't too bad. After the intial half mile of blown out double track, it gets pretty narrow and overgrown, but she still goes. On the way up, I let out most of the air in my rear tire to aid in traction.
As a climb, I would say that 95% of Trail #101 isn't all that bad, but the final 200 ft of trail before it tops out is where it really shows its ugly side; it took me over 30 minutes to push/pull my machine up that heinous stretch of trail. Almost considered leaving my rig on the trail and walking out of there, but I'm glad I stuck it out.
