Managed to get the sludge trap open after liberal application of heat and using a hand held impact driver. Slight delay until I realised that I was actually driving it deeper at one point!...

OK - Got the timing cover off with well timed and judicious use of an impact driver and it's pretty fugly in there....What little oil that remains is old and 'burnt' and everything is coated in black...
