The 2018 MotoGP British Grand Prix was canceled due to bad weather conditions, which made the legendary Silverstone too unsafe. Heavy rain in combination with the new asphalt have become the main reason of a strong aquaplaning, that’s why riding motorcycles in such conditions is like suicide.
The organizers delayed the start as long as they could, but soon it became clear that the race couldn’t be held. It began to rain during Moto2 and Moto3 warm-up sessions.
MotoGP racers rode a few test laps to assess the track conditions. Alvaro Bautista left the track because of too much water. The team managers then met with the organizers, and the start was delayed. It didn’t stop raining, and Monday race was not an option, so it was decided to cancel the round.
Unstoppable rain ruined everything. It all began with the Saturday FP4 session, when Tito Rabat suffered in crash. The Spaniard fell due to strong aquaplaning, being hit by Franco Morbidelli’s bike. Tito received multiple fractures to his right leg. He already had a successful surgery.
Last year, they completely changed the asphalt on the Silverstone track, and as a result they got problems with drainage. A lot of water accumulates at Stowe. At night marshals did everything they possibly could to run an event, but unfortunately the only way was to cancel the race.
The last MotoGP race to be called off was Austria in 1980. Organizers then had to stop the Grand Prix because of the snow.
