Although Cagiva has been known for its street and Grand Prix bikes, the Italian firm had a motocross range in the ' 80s in which it included a 500 WMX.
The mythical elephant brand was founded by Giovanni Castiglioni in 1950, to enter the world of motorcycle manufacturing in the late '70s, where he managed to gain a foothold in the market even reaching manufacture 40,000 motorcycles a year. While they were working on street and Grand Prix bikes, who doesn't remember those 500! they began producing their motocross range, the WMX. Within that range there were 125, 250 and 500.
It is necessary to travel to the United States, specifically to Connecticut to locate a piece for which time does not seem to have passed. At the time, we talk about 1985, this model was sold around $ 2,550, so it was not a particularly cheap bike. Now, its owner, the only one who has had it all his life, wants to sell it and at the Ebay auction it has a reserve price of$9,900. It may seem like a large sum for a 36-year-old motorcycle but the truth is that you only have to stop a little to look at the details to see that this is a unique specimen, since only 200 were imported to the United States and are not easy to locate.
In addition to having a spectacular appearance, there is one thing that stands out, and that is that its swingarm is especially long. And that has a reason: it is a bike prepared for Hill-Climb, that is, climbs to the hill. A specialty with a lot of tradition in the United States and that requires some preparation. In this case the front suspension is WP, the rear Öhlins and has something that is almost not used on a climb: Brembo brakes.
On this model, with VIN number ZCGCBXHX7FV000160, has fallen a lot of reconstruction work in which the owner claims to have invested around 3,000$ to leave it with the look it is. In this process he carried out the change of the handlebar (Renthal), air filter, spark plug, oil, front and rear mudguards, tires, number plates, radiator covers, chain guides, engine and exhaust repainting, swingarm and tank polishing as well as all the aluminum parts (hubs, levers, clamps, seatposts...). In short, we are facing a unit that is painful to stain with mud again, although the truth is that it is to hear it in motion, feel how it roars and makes you want to get on and give gas.
