Can't Leave Well Enough Alone

I thought this would be a mild restoration, minor modding, lots of cleaning and adjusting but once I start I can't stop. Once the cam cover was off, I had to pull the head off and I couldn't resist pulling the jug, which naturally will lead to a new piston and sleeve.

I've been fighting with the cylinder all week trying to get it free of the engine case and today with some help from my stepdad finally popped it off. It took some "persuasion" with a torch, mallet and a block of wood but it eventually came loose.

Based on the excessive carbon buildup on the piston and combustion chamber, we decided to install smaller jets in the Mikuni carb to try to lean it out a little.

Head is off

A lot of buildup for 8000 miles. The carb had the biggest jet possible installed.

Finally got the cylinder off after some not-so-gentle persuasion

Stuffed the case full of rags so gasket material doesn't fall in when I'm cleaning it up

The big nasty OEM battery. I'd like to replace it with a Shorai.

The head will go to my shop foreman at work to fit the new valve springs, the Cylinder will go to a machinist

I cleaned up the back wheel and brake and knocked it back on.
