Students at Munich’s University of Applied sciences developed the Ducati on four wheels project, looking to develop a new form of transportation.
They represented – on projects and models - their vision of what world-famous motorcycles of the famous Italian brand Ducati might look like in a four-wheel (it’s still not automobile, but close to a motorcycle) form.
The project was initiated by Klemens Rossnagel of Audi Group Design (let’s remind, that the brand Ducati now belongs to the company Audi AG). The curator of the project was Professor Otmar Wickenhaser from the University's design department.
Riding a motorcycle requires a lot of physical effort, a lot of work - it's not like sitting in a comfortable 4-wheeled car. And not only because the riders have two wheels less than the drivers, but also because the force of the wind affects the motorcyclist much more directly than the driver of the car.
Students were required to take into account these factors, conduct research on various possible positions of riders and present projects that would make driving on their invented four-wheeled Ducati as comfortable and safe as possible, and at the same time quick and able to give as much pleasure as riding a typical Ducati motorcycle.
As a result, 8 ideas were picked up, and they were embodied in real models at a scale of 1: 3. All eight concepts are presented in the attached illustrations. They are Ducati Toro concept by Patrick Kandora, Ducati Assalto by Florian Rothbauer, Ducati Scorpion by Pascal Sauter, Ducati Barracuda by Hendrik Terwort, Ducati Bestia by Eugen Pevzner, Ducati Elemento by Mark Osipov, Ducati Sparata by Arnfinn Sarau and Ducati Rhiba by Peter Lauer.
Although all the concepts are very different - some of them are electric, some are usual petrol ones - all of them emphasize one main idea - motorcycles, despite the fact that it may sound strange, can be four-wheeled and quite safe, and at the same time give as much pleasure as riding a traditional motorcycle.
