It’s a new chapter in the Ducati’s history. The Italian manufacturer introduced the Ducati Desmosedici Stradale V4 engine for the new Ducati Panigale V4 to be officially unveiled November 5.
The Desmosedici Stradale engine, like all other Ducati engines, is based on the Desmodromic technology, which allows to obtain high performance from engines. All components of the new unit are redesigned to achieve maximum compactness, lightness, sophistication.
Most of the engine parts are die-cast magnesium, which guarantees durability and lightness. However, the engine casings are made from die-cast aluminum, while the cylinder sleeves are Nikasil-coated aluminum, which reduces friction and wear-out. Four camshafts move 16 steel valves. The intake valves are 34 mm in diameter, and the outtake valves are 27.5 mm, so they are quite large considering the cylinder bore (only 81 mm).
The camshafts are driven by "quiet" chain gears. At the front, the chain is driven by an intake camshaft, which transmits the power to the exhaust camshaft through several gears. Behind the chain gear drives the exhaust camshaft, which transmits the power to the intake camshaft. The system minimizes discrepancies in timings to increase performance and reliability.
