It’s not a secret, that a chain, at the moment, is the most common transmission for motorcycles. I think everyone knows that compared to the belt and cardan, the chain has many advantages, but there is one most important drawback, I mean the need of constant maintenance (according to the manufacturers’ recommendations every 310 miles or every time after rain).
Anyone who drives more than a couple of thousand miles during the season, thinks how to make life easier with the maintenance of the chain. I'm not the exception, so I bring to your attention the review of the existing automatic chain oilers.
Before going directly to the products, let’s make a small classification.
Pumping method:
- 1. Electronic control
- 2. Vacuum system
- 3. Droplet system
Place of oiler:
- 1. Sprocket
- 2. Chain
Systems of automatic chain oilers.
& & 1. Scottoiler eSystem
It’s one of the most famous systems from Scottoiler. The basis of the system is a pump with an oil reservoir, a controller with a display and a built-in accelerometer, it senses vibration and movement. The self-starting electronic pump, responding to vibration, pushes oil only when it knows the bike is moving. On the display it’s easy to regulate the oil flow depending on the weather conditions, in addition, it provides ambient temperature and oil reservoir level. System reconfiguration is possible when moving.
Features and results:
1. Electronic control with lubrication on the sprocket.
2. The price is $299.95.
3. A lot of information on installation and use.
4. A huge number of kits for different manufacturers, additional accessories.
5. Requires the use of proprietary oil.
6. In case the price is not important, it’s the best choice.
2. Scottoiler vSystem
Another not less famous system from Scottoiler. The vSystem is vacuum operated. When the bike engine is running a vacuum is created, this lifts a diaphragm which in turn opens a valve in the main oil reservoir. The oil is simply siphoned from the reservoir by gravity, the engine vacuum provides the power to open the valve and the dial at the top allows you to adjust the flow rate by opening/closing the valve aperture. In various kits there are differences in fixing elements, associated with the construction features of motorcycles, as well as design features. Reconfiguration of the system is possible only during the stop.
Features and results:
1. Vacuum control with lubrication on the sprocket.
2. The price is $139.95.
3. A lot of information on installation and use.
4. A huge number of kits for different manufacturers, additional accessories.
5. Requires the use of proprietary oil.
6. More complicated connection with access to the engine.
7. When you want a Scottoiler system, but you can buy something cheaper.
3. Cameleon Oiler
You can buy it on EBay or Amazon. The basis of the system is a valve with an integrated controller connected to the electrical chain of the motorcycle. The oil supply is adjustable within a wide range. Since there is no pump in the system, it requires reconfiguration every time temperature or viscosity of the oil changes. Reconfiguration of the system is possible only during the stop.
Features and results:
1. Electronic control with lubrication on the sprocket.
2. The price is $139.99.
3. A lot of information on installation and use.
4. As there is no oil reservoir, a clear vinyl hose is used that is one meter long.
5. It’s preferable to use proprietary oil, but it’s also possible to use any other.
4. Loobman AB chainoiler
You can buy it on the official website. The basis of the system is an oil reservoir with a button. When it’s pressed, the oil arrives on the sprocket. There is no possibility of adjustment. It’s completely manual system, without automatic oil supply.
Features and results:
1. Droplet system with manual control with lubrication on the sprocket.
2. The price is £22.99.
3. A lot of information on installation and use.
4. Any oil can be used.
5. PDOiler.
You can buy it on the official website. The basis of the system is a pump with an oil reservoir (in some kits they are separated) and a controller. It is possible to adjust the frequency of the pump, the amount of oil is not adjustable, but it is always the same despite temperature and oil viscosity. They also use a wick system to brush the oil direct on to the chain instead of letting it drip on.
Features and results:
1. Electronic control with lubrication on the sprocket.
2. The price is from £99.99 to £134.99.
3. A lot of information on installation and use.
4. One universal kit for everything, additional accessories are also missing.
5. Any oil can be used.
6. Pro-Oiler
You can buy it on the official website. The basis of the system is a pump with an oil reservoir and a controller with a GPS receiver and a display. It receives speed/distance data over satellites and after a certain run gives a signal to pump the lubricant to the chain with micro-precision. The pumping of oil is the same, insensitive to temperature and oil viscosity. There are 2 buttons “+” and “-“ for changing the settings while on the move - and for programming, priming and other special functions.
Features and results:
1. Electronic control with lubrication on the sprocket.
2. The price is 199.00€.
3. & A lot of information on installation and use.
4. One universal kit for everything, additional accessories are also missing.
5. Any oil can be used.
7. Tutoro oiler
You can buy it on the official website. The main systems: an oil reservoir with a regulator, which allows you to adjust the rate of oil intake, as in a conventional dropper. They say it works only while moving, but how it was achieved is not clear. As it is a droplet system, it needs to be reconfigured depending on temperature and oil viscosity.
Features and results:
1. Droplet system with lubrication on the sprocket.
2. The price is from £72.00 to £102.00.
3. A lot of information on installation and use.
4. It is recommended to use its own special oil, the use of other oil is highly not recommended.
8. OSCO (One Second Chain Oiler)
You can buy it on the official website. The basis of the system is an oil reservoir with a plunger, which allows you to pump up to 10 ml of oil at a time. They say this is a semi-automatic system, which means that it is necessary to use the plunger for operation, which, according to the manufacturer, is analog of the usual chain lubricant spray. The average lubricating interval is about 200 miles. According to the lubrication instruction you should move at minimum speed, pull the plunger and then release it, continue driving at this speed from 50 to 100 meters, while the plunger squeezes the oil on the chain for 7 to 10 seconds. As a result, the chain is lubed.
Features and results:
1. The semi-automatic system without constant lubrication on the sprocket.
2. The price is about €139,00.
3. A lot of information on installation and use.
4. You can use both branded oil and any other (transmission or engine oil).
9. Motobriiz Wind Powered Automatic Motorcycle Chain Oiler
You can buy it on the official website. The Motobriiz automatic chain oiler is powered by the wind. Wind is collected by the inlet tube to pressurize the reservoir and it regulates the rate of oil supply. Due to the constant contact of the chain with the oil applicator, it is necessary to have some extra ones ($4.99 per piece). Due to the lack of a pump, the system is affected by temperature and oil viscosity. Since there is no adjustment, it is necessary to select oil of a certain viscosity for your operating conditions.
Features and results:
1. Droplet system with automatic oil change depending on the speed of the motorcycle with lubrication chain through a special felt pad.
2. The price is $92.00.
3. A lot of information on installation and use.
4. Any oil suitable for the chain can be used.
