The Belgian brand Saroléa, several years participating with its SP7 electric bike in the TT races on the Isle of Man, presented a serial version of another electric bike MANX7.
Racing is the engine of technological progress. There is no other place, where the manufacturer can test prototypes in really extreme conditions, where the rider reaches the absolute top speed of the motorcycle. In the case of the new Sarolea MANX7 Limited electric bike, this vehicle went through the most serious testing of the most difficult, demanding and dangerous competitions - the great and terrible Tourist Trophy on the Isle of Man! And this, indisputably, is the best school of life for a road sportbike.
The serial version is much like a combat electric bike and shares with it some curious technical details. For example, the original design of the chain tension system: for this simple procedure on the MANX7 Limited, you do not need to move the rear wheel axle, as on conventional road bikes. And there are both advantages and disadvantages: on the one hand, because there is no chain tension system in the swingarm, there is less unsprung weight, on the other hand, when the power unit moves, the center of gravity changes.
Among other curious technical ideas, I would like to notice the fastening of the rear brake caliper integrated into the swingarm. Instead of running a complicated set of rearsets and gear/brake levers that dangle outside the bike in all their mechanical rudeness, the Manx7's footpeg hangers are hidden back behind the swingarm somewhere, and they poke right through little curved slots that allow the swingarm to articulate around them.
MANX7 Limited is powered by a 163-hp permanent-magnet brushless electric motor and a torque of 450 Nm. And it is obvious that the engine's potential is limited by force. The top speed is 240 km/h. Dean Harrison’s SP7 with an average speed of 108,064 mph, had a much more significant 204 hp. at the same rates of thrust. Moreover, the Belgians admitted, that during testing this electric bike reached the maximum power of 245 hp, and the torque depending on the settings - from 600 to 900 Nm. And it’s not the limit! According to the company’s co-founder Thorsten Robbens (who worked with Toyota and McLaren in F1), the top torque exceeds 1200 Nm, but the battery can’t withstand this pressure. And exactly the lack of a suitable power source stops engineers from using the full potential of the electric motorcycle.
The Saroléa battery pack is a li-ion 400v energy-dense battery system for high-performance vehicles and is available in three capacities: 14kWh (230km range), 18kWh (280km range), 22kWh (330km range). The pack can be easily removed. Also the bike has DC quick charge capabilities compatible with automotive standards allowing the bike to charge from 0 to 80% in 25 minutes. Certainly, the charging from the household terminal will take much more.
It is clear that such a diamond needed a suitable frame. Therefore, the carbon fiber chassis is equipped with an Öhlins FGRT-200 fork and Öhlins TTX36 mono-shaft, Beringer brakes and OZ Racing Gass-R forged wheels. All this helped to keep the weight at 217 kg.
