If you need further proof of the rise in popularity of middleweight and lightweight adventure bikes, feast your eyes on the AJP PR7 Rally. You’ve probably never heard of AJP — the Portuguese manufacturer doesn’t have the global reach of BMW or KTM, but, according to report from MCN, its PR7 just broke cover, and it’s available in the States.
While the more prominent motorcycle manufacturers are dragging their feet bringing lighter adventure bikes to market (we’re looking at you Yamaha), it’s encouraging to see a smaller operation like AJP, which tends to stick to pure off-road bikes, step up and build a road-legal, rally-inspired ADV. The decline of big and heavy, albeit capable, adventure machines like the BMW R1250GS and KTM 1290 Super Adventure isn’t a death sentence for the big bike segment. But smaller, more manageable bikes like the PR7 are more approachable to a wider audience and growing in numbers.
At $9,995, the AJP PR7 undercuts most of the middleweight adventure motorcycles on the market — the Honda CRF450L and forthcoming KTM 690 Adventure. There are downsides, of course: an incredibly sparse dealer network. But the performance and specs suggest it’d be worth the road trip to find one.
The 600cc single cylinder engine is good for 60 horsepower, and at just over 344 pounds, that’s more than enough push to tackle the trails. With fully-adjustable Sachs suspension, front and rear, and 12.6-inches of ground clearance, there aren’t many trails that would give you a problem. Things get interesting when it comes to the dashboard display because it’s not your industry-standard TFT display. AJP fitted a removable Samsung tablet which not only displays typical information like a tachometer and speed but shows navigation and weather, as well.
