The Kawasaki KZ1000 boasts an illustrious and diverse history in the world of motorcycles. Referred to as the Z1000 outside North America, this robust air-cooled inline four made its debut in 1977 and maintained its presence on the market, particularly as a police model, until 2005. During its prime, racing legends such as Pops Yoshimura and Freddie Spencer achieved victory with KZ1000s in prestigious competitions like AMA Superbike. Additionally, this iconic motorcycle graced television and cinema screens worldwide, with notable appearances by Jon and Ponch from the original CHiPs TV series, who rode KZ1000 police models, and the inclusion of fourteen KZ1000s donated by an Australian Kawasaki dealer in the original Mad Max film (1979).
Nova Motorcycles, established in 2013 by Sayre Anthony and Pete Chilton, now enters the picture. Sayre, with a heritage rooted in European car mechanics, honed his skills with the Brooklyn-based vintage Grand Prix motorcycle racing team, Team Obsolete. Pete, on the other hand, grew up in a family of builders and craftsmen, spending thirteen years in the music industry before transitioning to a career in design.
The 1980 KZ1000 showcased here arrived at the shop with worn shift forks, prompting the decision to undertake a comprehensive rebuild. The client, eager for an upgrade, requested the incorporation of a swinger from a 2004 ZX-6R. As the project progressed, Nova Motorcycles continued to enhance and modify, resulting in a fully customized KZ1000 masterpiece.
After some online research, it was discovered that a 2004 ZX6 swing arm could be seamlessly integrated into the original KZ1000 frame. Nova Motorcycles engineered a mono-shock frame trellis and bolstered subframe stiffness to accommodate larger, grippier tires.
To improve handling and braking performance, the front end was transformed into a 2005 ZX636R unit, complemented by Shinko Advance 005 tires for a smooth ride.
The Tarozzi rear sets underwent selective powder coating in a striking copper hue, contrasted by an anodized flat black finish.
In lieu of the stock tank, a race-inspired Yamaha XS850 tank took its place, featuring exquisite pinstriping by Ken Jacobs and a powder-coated gas cap for added flair.
A comprehensive electronics overhaul was executed to integrate the new Motogadget M-unit Blue, complete with a matching mini gauge and switches. The custom-made triple clamp now houses these sophisticated gauges.
Illuminating the way forward is an aftermarket LED lamp, DOT approved for safety, suspended from Nova's own meticulously designed and crafted headlight ears.
