How to fix an erratic speedo, most of the time this is a part worth changing

This job is a nice easy and cheap one for your VFR. If you find your speedometer is becoming erratic, or worse, simply stops then there is often a simple fix by replacing a plastic coupler. You can inspect it quickly and replace it for about £8 (March 2024 eBay prices). The issue tends to be wear on the plastic part’s female hex side which couples to a bolt on the sprocket. As it rounds, the speedo gives erratic readings

You can even buy 44808-MR7-013 from Honda for not much more

No fairings need to be removed for this one, simply wheel your bike somewhere that you can work on the nearside and you will find the sensor readily accessible

There are two 8mm bolts to remove first

Then simply give it a little wriggle and out it will pop

The hexagon end mounts directly on the bolt head you can see below

Use a screwdriver (or in my case a pry bar!) to ease the plastic piece of the speedo drive shaft

There was some fairly obvious wear and rounding on mine:

Make sure the shaft doesn’t have any excessive wear and rotates freely before fitting your new part

Then it’s just a case of sliding the plastic part onto the shaf

Make sure it seats well and that you feel no resistance on the bolts when you put the sensor back into place then tighten up the 8mm bolts again
