In today’s world of advanced technologies it’s really easy to generate anything spectacular for big-budget Hollywood flicks, and at the same time it’s increasingly rare to see studios options for building real-life versions of unique vehicles featured in various films.
The 2009 movie Terminator: Salvation was veritable special effects extravaganza. But it turns out this bike itself was no computer creation. It was a real bike, built by real humans. Though it was practically impossible to identify under this robotic skeletal body and structural work, but the custom is built around the frame of a 2009 Ducati Monster 1100 S.
“This movie is all about technology taken to such a high level that it becomes an art form,” said “Terminator Salvation” director McG. “To me that fits as a description of Ducati. The bikes came through like champions.” McG actually purchased one of the four bikes used in the movie.
If we talk about the movie, the bike is the machine on two wheels that Skynet sent to hunt people on the streets of the United States in 2018. The bike has no pilot, being equipped with artificial intelligence and permanently connected with Skynet's “brain”.
Computer graphics were used to create the Moto-Terminators based on the design and performance of the Hypermotard, however the actual bikes were used for all the stunt riding in the film.
The bike itself features the original bike’s tires and powerful 1078cc 90 bhp L-twin engine. It also includes sawed-off handlebars, made it difficult for even an expert to handle. The motards retain their stock frame and suspension. The foot and hand-controls have been seamlessly integrated into the design. One of the cool touches are the inverted forks hiding beneath all this craziness. The designer Victor Martinez did a remarkable job of changing up the entire profile of the motorcycles.
The custom trailer for “Terminator Salvation” was released earlier this week in Ducati dealerships nationwide as well as on the Ducati website.
As for the Moto-Terminator Ducati, you can see the actual bike used the film as part of the Petersen’s “Hollywood Dream Machines” exhibition, which will be on view through March 2020.
