Over the last few years, it has become clear that electric motorcycles will play an increasingly important role in the motorcycle industry. Most manufacturers have electrical programs implemented in various stages of development. Plus, there are new electric startups. Universities and colleges are preparing the next generation of engineers and designers who are well aware of electronics.
Spain’s Elisava University promotes electric motorcycles.This year, for the first time, Elisava tasked its students to develop an electric off-road race bike from scratch to compete in the 2019 Barcelona Smart Moto Challenge (or BSMC), which has been annually held since 2013. It’s also a very popular event that invites schools from all over the world.
The Elisava Racing team, comprised of 11 people developed the Eray electric bike. The “Eray” the project was broken down into four key phases, and then individual tasks were divided amongst the team.In addition, the students were aimed to create not just an electric bike, but a complete commercial product.

It took nine months to develop and build the bike. The Elisava Racing Team managed to secure two 1st place prizes: one for best battery pack; and another for best smart solution.
