This 1989 KTM Works 250 was built for motocrosser Broc Glover to compete in Europe. A California native, Glover is primarily known as Yamaha’s MX hired gun in the U.S. from the late-1970s to the mid-’80s, and he tallied many wins and six national titles along the way.
He’s also among the Top 10 racers listed in the Monster Energy 30 Greatest AMA Motocrosser list. Though primarily known throughout his career as a motocross specialist, he also was a leading contender in AMA Supercross early on. He won 10 AMA Supercross races during his career, including the final AMA Supercross race he ever competed in for the season finale at the Los Angeles Coliseum in June 1988.
Following a few seasons interrupted by injuries and being at odds with Yamaha, “Golden Boy” Glover was thinking about retirement when KTM coaxed him back with the promises of racing in Europe on this machine. Little did Glover know at the time, the bike was not even constructed yet, but KTM was determined to build a world-class machine with Glover’s talents and input. In 1989, Glover did race in the World Championship Motocross.
The factory KTM squad he rode for was not a major factor in the championship, but Glover did win the final moto of the season. This is the actual factory works 250cc machine—not a replica—that Glover campaigned in the 1989 Grand Prix, and it was literally hand-built. This bike was later sent over to the U.S. for Glover and other KTM riders to compete on. After its service to the company, it was completely restored by a KTM mechanic to its current condition. There is only one Broc Glover and only one KTM with his history.
