New spyshots have emerged showing that KTM are working on another 1290 Super Duke GT update less than a year after the current model received a minor refresh. Appearing to be a ground-up redesign, it all points to KTM making a significant investment.
There had been some questions over the future of the model, after photos emerged of KTM testing a 17in wheeled 1290 Super Adventure but these shots suggest the GT is here to stay.
The most obvious change is that the front has had a redesign, with all new headlight, screen and surrounding bodywork. The styling of the Super Duke GT has always been divisive, with the illuminated protuberance becoming a hallmark.
Now that’s gone although it appears to have been replaced with something no less striking. It’s more than just a cosmetic redesign of course, with the new headlight area housing a cruise control radar unit as seen on the Super Adventure S.
The new bodywork also hides what appears to be a new tank shape, quite possibly larger for more touring competence, as well as a larger radiator.
Barring the radiator and a new exhaust, the engine appears virtually unchanged. It’s possible KTM will have given the GT a minor capacity boost to help offset any losses from the emissions stranglehold.
KTM have housed the engine in a new steel trellis frame. It’s not immediately obvious why, other than a desire to shift a bit of weight or to help repackage other internal components.
f KTM are taking it in the direction we believe, more touring less sports, then it’s possible they’ve relaxed the geometry a bit in the process for improved stability.
