KTM undeniably produces some of the most competent and high-performance adventure motorcycles in existence — as evidenced by the fact that the Ready To Race brand has won 18 out of the last 20 Dakar Rallies. As a result, it’s exceedingly difficult to heavily modify and rework these already-impressive ADV bikes and come out on the other side with a superior machine, yet that’s nonetheless exactly what Gregor Halenda of Saku Moto has done with his latest one-off two-wheeler; a thoroughly-kitted KTM Adventure 890 R that’s been drenched in carbon fiber and decked out with top-shelf off-road upgrades.
Gregor began the project by completely tearing down the 890, pulling the engine from the chassis, and then treating the framework to a nickel-coating inspired by the vintage Rickman-framed Penton desert sled that the builder also owns. From there, the modern adventure motorcycle was gifted a custom navigation tower that now houses a clear windscreen, the bike’s instrumentation, and a Tripltek GPS tablet. From that point, smaller additions were introduced to the project such as a Renazco seat, a rear luggage rack, a pair of Highway Dirt Bikes hand-guards, and a custom laser-cut skid plate. The build also now rides on an off-road-ready set of spoked Takasago Excel wheels shod in Goldentyre knobbies. Halenda has also opted to retain the donor’s top-shelf WP XPLOR Pro suspension package.
The project’s pièce de ré·sis·tance, however, is undoubtedly its full suite of exposed carbon fiber bodywork — a combination of off-the-shelf panels and fully-bespoke pieces that are mounted using quick-release DZUS fasteners. Alongside a full-length carbon fiber fairing, the new bodywork includes a carbon tank cover, carbon quarter pannels, carbon fork guards, carbon fenders, carbon radiator shrouds, and even carbon braces for the bike’s navigation tower. What’s more, the 100-hp 889cc parallel-twin at the heart of the R-spec 890 ADV has been bestowed with a titanium SC-Project exhaust system.
Thus far, Saku Moto’s KTM 890 ADV R is just a one-off build, though Halenda tells us that if enough people express interest, he may begin producing additional examples — either as one-off builds or as a kit.
