Day 25 - Bowen to Emu Bay - 579kms
Today was a long hot ride and the bush fires up wind of us made it feel like we were being slow cooked in a smoker. I'm guessing I smelled similar to smoked salmon because Alicia insisted I shower before she shared a tent with me. I know we did a lot of stuff today but the heat must have cooked my brain because all I remember is a big mango, pulling into Emu Park and jumping in the ocean. The life guard at the beach gave me a friendly nod which I took as "Jump on in Mate! Nothing deadly here at the moment". After Playing/Bathing in the ocean we walked straight out and into the nearest pub to sort out a few drinks and dinner. My cider went quicker than expected due to a "Buffalo" call by Alicia. Watch out guys, this ones on point.
We ducked in for dinner at a BYOB place which I interpreted as "Bring Your Own Bundy" so we had pizza, salad, prawns and I had plenty of Bundaberg Rum to prep me for tomorrow's distillery tour.
From here things get a little fuzzy but I'm sure that just because of the long ride and hot weather.
Alicia's Comments:
So I have figured out after the first 300km of riding everything is fine and dandy, anything after that my ass bones feel like they are protruding through my cheeks (sorry for writing about my sore ass each night, won't happen again). Today my Moto speed record was 136km/hr because I needed to overtake within a medium to short distance. I have noticed over here in QLD on major highways that most of the time the maximum speed is 100km. I am way too impatient for these types of road shenanigans, so is Christopher.
There are copious numbers of cheap fresh fruit stalls along the highway so we have created a ritual of a mango a morning until we find somewhere for brekki. Today we stopped at the beginning of the Whitsundays at an artisan cafe where they grow their own coffee. We made friends with a Cocky called Boss who loved a scratch on his head. For those of you who don't know what a cocky is, it's a white bird with a yellow feather on top of its head. Also known as a Cockatoo (google that shit if you need a better explanation).
One of the highlights of my day was taking a shower and watching the flying foxes whoosh above the mangroves through a small brick window.....is that creepy?
