Exhaust Genius's look. interesting

I don't think anyone has brought up this question, BUT...Reason I'm asking: I have GSXR and am going to modify the exhaust to basically a full racing system. I'm going to take out the SET valve butterfly and cut the cat off, but my buddy Derek brought up an interesting idea due to the exhaust design on his buell.

His muffler is directly under the bike.

MY QUESTION: After where the header pipes meet into one pipe, does there need to be some straight pipe from then on to the muffler? or can I run a muffler directly after where the header meets into one big pipe, only maintaining a few inches, 10-12'' max of straight pipe in between?

I thought this really abrupt opening would hurt the engine because it kind of is like running open headers because the transition from headers, to a little bit of straight pipe, to muffler, is much faster. Would this type of setup do some damage to the engine/valves, or would I be alright? I want to keep the muffler under the bike if possible, please don't offer suggestions about putting it on the side because I really don't want to have to do that.

Just throwing some bike exhaust knowledge out here

Running just a straight pipe on a bike is fine, just shitty sound. The problem with running open headers is the lack of back pressure and the ability for cold air to be sucked back into the exhaust. This would cause your warped valves and such.

I would think, think not know, that as long as the system is closed and sealed then it would not matter if it was pipe, muffler, etc.
