BMW presented the Concept 6 in 2009, before the K 1600 GT and K 1600 GTL were presented. It was an impressive six-cylinder roadster – on two wheels. We are still waiting for a serial version that matches or at least the same. Although the K 1600 series has now been extended by various luxury tourers and excavators, from the B to the Grand America, the K 1600 R is still missing.
At the same time there has already been a special development in the direction of roads, by private inventors and professional mechanics. The latest K 1600 R comes from France, from BMW’s French dealer Bymycar in east Paris. He has been given an additional terrifying name: animals.
The French workshop team has repeatedly reduced the K 1600 GT: the rear is very shortened, and there is no passenger seat, pannier or top cover. Although the right has not been completely removed from the front, it has been significantly reduced, opened up and restructured. The air filter exits on the left and right between the side panels and the windshield. From there, the incoming air flows together to the ’52 central throttle body, where fuel is injected before the mixture is distributed to the six cylinders. With slightly less resistance in each case on the air filters and sound insulation reduced right under the footwells, the maximum performance of the six-pack increases from 160 to around 170 hp.
Ditched ballast adds more power: the R has lost more than 100kg of the GT’s mass, said to weigh “just” 240kg. And since, as is known, less can be more, animals from Bymycar cost 65,000 euros (about $64,800). Included is a dark red paint job on the frame and Duolever front wheel suspension as well as conversion of the wheels to standard wire spokes. The rear wheel in particular comes on its own on a single-sided cardan swingarm and without the annoying exhaust.
The BMW K 1600 R has been a long time coming since 2009. The roadster with six cylinders on two wheels is still not available from the factory. Bestiale and Bymycar from France are now a further inspiration in this direction. One series so far, but it could be a mini series.
