Clutch Lever Replacement & Dual Microswitch for Clutch Lever
Began to notice my Spiegler Black Synto brake and clutch levers were turning purple. They were just a few years old so, I contacted the company. They agreed to replace the defective product with a silver item that should not change color. The brake lever was very simple to replace. The clutch lever which I had replaced before became an issue. Here is what I learned.
The correct manner to remove/replace the clutch lever on the Gen 2 XR is pretty specific. If you fail to do this one can damage the small metal folding clips on the clutch dual microswitch. Once they are off it is extremely difficult/impossible to get them back on/together. Then, you have to replace the clutch dual microswitch (32 72 8389068 - S 1000 XR, 2020 - Handlebar, Control Fixtures, Cables (32) | Bobs BMW Bob's Motorcycles) that is $113.
Talked with a BMW Motorrad mechanic who walked me through the process. Loosen the clutch cable by adjusting the self-locking nut/clutch adjusting screw, take the clutch assembly off the handlebar & flipped it over 180 degrees. Disconnect the clutch dual microswitch & remove the long screw. After you have installed the new clutch lever reinstall the clutch dual microswitch. Put a small piece of paper over the clutch dual microswitch closing the small metal folding clips. Then, install the clutch dual microswitch. There is a hole that secures the clutch dual microswitch in place. Put in the long screw and slowly remove the paper. Re-assemble the clutch assembly to the handlebar and adjust the clutch lever.
The BMW mechanic told me damage to the clutch dual microswitch happens all the time with the BMW 1000 bikes. Becuase, folks like me do not follow the manufactures recommended procedure to remove/replace the clutch lever...
