The people working at Harley-Davidson call it the Screamin’ Eagle Milwaukee-Eight, but the rest of us will come to know it as the most powerful street-legal crate engine Harley-Davidson ever made: enter the 131ci V-Twin, specifically designed to be used on Touring motorcycles.
Launched on the market as a crate engine this week, the 131 (2,147 cc) powerplant is meant to be a bolt-in replacement for the Milwaukee-Eight oil-cooled or twin-cooled engines deployed on Touring bikes manufactured starting with 2017. We’ll probably get to see it on other builds in no time, as well.
Harley says the new engine was designed to run at high rpm, and will “provide a significant boost of torque from cruising speed.” This was made possible by combining the 4.5-inch stroke of the Milwaukee-Eight 114 engine with brand new 4.31-inch bore cylinders.
1 mm larger-diameter valves, high-lift camshaft, high-compression forged pistons, and high-flow fuel injectors are just a few of the elements that had to come together and make this engine capable of churning out 121 hp and 131 ft-lb of torque at the rear wheel (when paired with Screamin’ Eagle Street Cannon mufflers).
“Our adrenaline-seeking riders asked for thrilling power and torque with reliability,” said in a statement when the engine was announced Harley-Davidson Product Manager James Crean.
“The Screamin’ Eagle 131 Crate Engine delivers exactly that. Developed by the Screamin’ Eagle performance team and factory-assembled at Harley-Davidson Powertrain Operations to ensure the highest quality standards, this high-performance engine is genuine Harley-Davidson.”
Visually, the engine will be shipped with a 131 Stage IV badging on the cylinder heads, and a timer cover. Two-color combinations are available for it, pitting black against either chrome or gloss.
Harley warns the engine can only work on the above-mentioned motorcycles, and will not fit inside Trike models.
