2022 was a good year for motorcycle sales. Only a few days after we reported the record global sales of Ducati, and the success of the Suzuki GSX-S1000 GT in the UK, BMW has announced that it sold 202,895 motorcycles and scooters worldwide in 2022 – the most in the company’s long history.
The impressive number of bikes sold represents an increase of +4.4 % compared to the previous year, and it gives BMW reason to claim the top spot in the global premium motorcycle and scooter segment.
For anyone who’s paid any attention to which bikes are the most popular in recent years, it comes as no surprise that the R 1250 GS and R 1250 GS Adventure boxer models were BMW’s best sellers again with a combined total of almost 60,000 units sold.
The single-cylinder G 310 R and G 310 GS models sold over 24,000 units worldwide, while the four-cylinder sports models, led by the S 1000 RR reached sales of almost 23,500 units.
Sales of electric motorcycles are still low compared to petrol bikes, but with almost 5,000 units already sold in the year of its market launch, the BMW CE 04 e-scooter didn’t do too badly.
Dr. Markus Schramm, Head of BMW Motorrad: "I would like to express my sincere thanks to our customers worldwide for the great trust they have placed in us again in 2022. The record result in 2022 clearly proves that our attractive product range and our brand are very popular with customers. I look forward to our centenary year in 2023 with great joy and confidence."
In 2023 BMW celebrates its 100th anniversary, which means that there is a good chance that some exciting new models will be revealed as part of the celebrations. We can’t wait to see what that will look like!
