Despite essentially creating the modern adventure motorcycle class with the release of its R80 G/S—which was used to win four out of the first seven runnings of the infamous Dakar Rally—BMW hasn’t really been a dominant force in rally raid events since the turn of the millennium. With the Bavarian brand’s last Dakar wins occurring in 1999 and 2000, Colombian custom moto outfit, Lolana Motos has decided to create a tribute to Hubert Auriol’s Dakar-winning G/S, using a BMW donor created in the same era in which BMW claimed its last Dakar win.
Drawing ample inspiration from the Le Point-sponsored G/S used to achieve BMW’s first-ever Dakar title, the build left the factory in 2002 as an R1150R, though the early-aughts roadster’s been extensively transformed into a retro-themed rally raider. The stock tank has been replaced with an old-school-looking high-capacity cell and a new subframe now supports a bespoke blue seat with white piping. Poking out from the back of the new seat is a stubby fender, while below is a dual under-tail muffler arrangement sandwiched between a set of custom race number plates. A tall windscreen, cage-protected headlight, high-mount fender, and auxiliary light-equipped crash bars all further the build’s off-road prowess while vintage grips and a replica livery of Hubert Auriol’s 1981 Dakar bike provide some retro flavor.
