The Dominican Republic and a trip to Puerto Plata - Part 1.
Trips to Europe and America...But what do you know about island travel? I will try to start a series of posts about the Dominican Republic, this amazing and beautiful Caribbean island.
My first post I will start from a trip to Puerto Plata... and visiting the Park that was built near the Spanish coastal defense Fort, but let's start from the beginning...
Beautiful but a little smelly Bay...
Entrance to the Park is free, because the coronavirus still scares everyone, almost no people...
Monument about information, the Park was opened in 2015
A view of the fortress from afar, since I was alone without a guide, here is some information that I found...
A key piece of Puerto Plata’s history, Fortaleza San Felipe was built by the Spaniards in the 16th century to defend the north coast of the Dominican Republic from the British and Dutch, and from French pirates in search of the area’s abundant gold and silver. Considered one of the most important colonial military structures in the Caribbean, it was completed in 1577 and later served as a prison from the 19th century through the Trujillo years. Now a museum, touring the fort reveals the original canons facing the Atlantic, ancient weapons, and numerous hidden chambers. The panoramic views over the Puerto Plata coastline are impressive. Catching the sunset at the foot of the fort, beside La Puntilla park, is a daily Puerto Plateño activity.
There is also a monument to General Gregorio Luperón. this is a fairly popular guy, he was born in Puerto Plata in a rather poor family, but despite this, he became the 20th President of the Dominican Republic.
Some monument, I do not know what it is but if someone knows I will be happy to know.
More pics of the fortress, unfortunately, I could not get inside because it was closed to visitors.
Modern architecture nearby ... I understand this is a concert arena..
Cannon for protection from pirates
Ruins of a building, I do not know what it is but it is painted with graffiti..
near I found a lighthouse, and climbed on it to make beautiful pics
I hope you liked it, to be continued...
